Summary

BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma: An In-Depth Review

BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma is a 2D fighting game developed by Arc System Works and released in arcades in Japan in 2012. It is the third game in the BlazBlue series, and is set after the events of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. Chrono Phantasma features several revamped gameplay mechanics, seven new characters, and a new story mode.

Gameplay

Chrono Phantasma retains the core gameplay mechanics of previous BlazBlue games, such as the Drive system and the Overdrive mechanic. However, several changes have been made to the gameplay to make it more balanced and exciting.

One of the most significant changes is the addition of the Overdrive mechanic. Overdrive is a new state that can be activated by pressing the D button. While in Overdrive, the player’s character gains access to new moves and abilities. Overdrive can be used to turn the tide of battle in the player’s favor, but it must be used strategically, as it can only be activated for a limited time.

Another major change to the gameplay is the addition of seven new characters to the roster. These characters each have their own unique playstyles and abilities, which adds a lot of variety to the game. The new characters include:

  • Celica A. Mercury – A young woman who wields a giant sword and has the ability to control time.
  • Es – A mysterious woman who wields a scythe and has the ability to manipulate space.
  • Izayoi – A powerful swordsman who is the leader of the Six Heroes.
  • Kagura Mutsuki – A young ninja who is the leader of the Mugen Tenshin clan.
  • Mai Natsume – A young woman who wields a pair of tonfas and has the ability to control fire.
  • Nine the Phantom – A mysterious woman who wields a pair of pistols and has the ability to control darkness.
  • Valkenhayn Hellsing – A vampire who wields a pair of swords and has the ability to control blood.

Story

The story of Chrono Phantasma takes place after the events of Continuum Shift. The world is still recovering from the Time Eater incident, but a new threat has emerged. The Azure Grimoire, a powerful artifact that can control time, has been stolen, and it is up to the heroes of the BlazBlue world to stop it from falling into the wrong hands.

The story mode in Chrono Phantasma is fully voiced and features branching paths. The player’s choices will affect the story’s outcome, so there is a lot of replayability.

Graphics and Sound

Chrono Phantasma is one of the best-looking 2D fighting games ever made. The character sprites are beautifully drawn and the backgrounds are incredibly detailed. The game also features some of the best music in the series, with a mix of rock, metal, and electronic tracks.

Overall

BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma is an excellent 2D fighting game that is a must-play for fans of the genre. The game features stunning graphics, an engaging story, and a deep and rewarding combat system. Whether you’re a seasoned BlazBlue veteran or a newcomer to the series, Chrono Phantasma is sure to impress.
