Summary

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift (2009)

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift is a fighting game developed by Arc System Works as a direct sequel to BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. It was released in arcades in Japan in 2009, and was ported to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. Continuum Shift retains the traditional 2D fighter gameplay of two characters participating in a duel on a two dimensional plane, and features a selection of new playable characters, new gameplay mechanics, and a revised story mode.

Gameplay

Continuum Shift’s gameplay is largely unchanged from Calamity Trigger. Players control one of a cast of characters and fight against each other using a variety of normal and special moves. Each character has their own unique set of moves and abilities, and players must learn how to use their character’s strengths and weaknesses to their advantage.

One of the new gameplay mechanics introduced in Continuum Shift is the Overdrive system. Overdrive is a state that can be activated by spending meter, and it gives the player a variety of benefits, such as increased attack power, faster movement speed, and access to new special moves. Overdrive can be used to turn the tide of battle in the player’s favor, but it must be used strategically, as it can be risky to activate.

Another new gameplay mechanic introduced in Continuum Shift is the Astral Heat system. Astral Heat is a powerful special move that can only be used once per round. Astral Heats deal massive damage and can often lead to a ring-out, but they are also very difficult to execute. Players must carefully consider when to use their Astral Heat, as it can be a game-changer if used at the right time.

Characters

Continuum Shift features a cast of 12 playable characters, four of which are new to the series. The new characters are:

  • Hazama: A mysterious man who wields the power of darkness.
  • Tsubaki Yayoi: A young woman who fights with a naginata.
  • Litchi Faye Ling: A Chinese woman who fights with a staff.
  • Bang Shishigami: A Japanese man who fights with a sword.

In addition to the new characters, Continuum Shift also features a number of returning characters from Calamity Trigger, such as Ragna the Bloodedge, Noel Vermillion, and Jin Kisaragi. Each character has their own unique story and motivations, and players can learn more about them by playing through the game’s story mode.

Story

Continuum Shift’s story mode takes place one year after the events of Calamity Trigger. The world has been plunged into chaos by the Black Beast, a powerful entity that threatens to destroy all of existence. Ragna the Bloodedge, the protagonist of Calamity Trigger, is determined to stop the Black Beast, but he must first overcome a number of obstacles, including the NOL, a powerful organization that seeks to control the Black Beast for its own purposes.

As Ragna and his allies fight their way through the NOL, they learn more about the Black Beast and its origins. They also discover that the Black Beast is not the only threat to the world, as a number of other powerful beings are also seeking to plunge the world into chaos.

Continuum Shift’s story mode is a complex and engaging tale that will keep players on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. The story is full of twists and turns, and players will be constantly surprised by the events that unfold.

Graphics and Sound

Continuum Shift features gorgeous 2D graphics that are some of the best in the genre. The character sprites are incredibly detailed and expressive, and the backgrounds are lush and vibrant. The game’s soundtrack is also excellent, and it features a mix of rock, metal, and electronic music that perfectly complements the game’s visuals and gameplay.

Conclusion

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift is a fantastic fighting game that improves upon its predecessor in every way. With its gorgeous visuals, tight controls, deep combat system, and engaging story mode, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift is a must-play for fans of the genre.
