Shadow Dancer: A Ninja’s Revenge
Released in arcades in 1989, Shadow Dancer is a side-scrolling action game developed and published by Sega. It is the sequel to the 1987 arcade game Shinobi, and features many of the same gameplay elements, such as fast-paced combat, challenging levels, and powerful weapons. However, Shadow Dancer also introduces some new features, such as a canine companion that can assist the player in combat.
The player controls a ninja named Geki, who is on a mission to rescue his kidnapped master from the evil sorcerer Zanzetsu. Geki must battle his way through hordes of enemies, including ninjas, robots, and mutants, in order to reach Zanzetsu’s lair and save his master.
Geki is armed with a sword and a unlimited supply of shurikens. He can also use a variety of ninja magic spells, such as fireballs, lightning bolts, and tornadoes. Geki’s canine companion, Yamato, can attack enemies by biting them. Yamato can also be used to scout ahead and find hidden items.
Shadow Dancer is known for its challenging difficulty. The levels are filled with traps and enemies, and the bosses are all very powerful. However, the game is also very rewarding, and players who are able to master the controls and defeat the bosses will find themselves greatly satisfied.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Shadow Dancer is very similar to that of Shinobi. The player controls Geki as he runs, jumps, and attacks his way through hordes of enemies. Geki can use his sword to attack enemies at close range, or he can throw shurikens to attack enemies from a distance. Geki can also use a variety of ninja magic spells to clear out large groups of enemies or to damage bosses.
One of the new features in Shadow Dancer is the addition of a canine companion named Yamato. Yamato can attack enemies by biting them, and he can also be used to scout ahead and find hidden items. Yamato is a valuable asset in combat, and he can help Geki to defeat even the most powerful enemies.
Levels
Shadow Dancer consists of four missions, each of which is divided into several stages. The first mission takes place in a forest, the second mission takes place in a city, the third mission takes place in a factory, and the fourth mission takes place in Zanzetsu’s lair. Each mission is filled with traps and enemies, and the bosses are all very powerful.
Weapons and Items
Geki can collect a variety of weapons and items to help him on his quest. These include:
- Shurikens: Geki’s main ranged weapon. He has an unlimited supply of shurikens, but they are not very powerful.
- Sword: Geki’s melee weapon. The sword is more powerful than shurikens, but it can only be used at close range.
- Ninja Magic: Geki can use a variety of ninja magic spells to clear out large groups of enemies or to damage bosses. Each spell uses up one unit of magic energy.
- Time Bombs: Geki can collect time bombs to increase his score and to gain access to new weapons and items.
- Extra Lives: Geki can collect extra lives to increase his chances of completing the game.
Enemies
Shadow Dancer features a wide variety of enemies, including:
- Ninjas: The most common type of enemy in the game. Ninjas are skilled in martial arts and can attack Geki with swords, shurikens, or magic spells.
- Robots: Robots are powerful enemies that can shoot lasers or rockets at Geki.
- Mutants: Mutants are deformed creatures that are immune to most of Geki’s attacks.
Bosses
Each mission in Shadow Dancer ends with a boss battle. The bosses are all very powerful, and they require Geki to use all of his skills and abilities to defeat them.
