Star Wars Battlefront: Outer Rim is the first expansion pack for the 2015 video game Star Wars Battlefront. It was developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. The expansion was released on March 22, 2016, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Outer Rim adds four new maps to the game:
- Sullust – A volcanic planet with industrial facilities and mining operations.
- Tatooine – A desert planet with Jabba the Hutt’s palace and sail barge garage.
- Jabba’s Palace – A large, indoor map with multiple levels and tight corridors.
- Sullust (Extraction) – A smaller, objective-based map set in the industrial facilities of Sullust.
The expansion also adds two new playable hero characters:
- Greedo – A Rodian bounty hunter who is armed with a blaster pistol and a thermal detonator.
- Nien Nunb – A Sullustian pilot who is armed with a blaster rifle and a homing missile launcher.
In addition to the new maps and heroes, Outer Rim also adds new weapons, Star Cards, and game modes. The new weapons include the Relby-v10 rifle and the DT-12 blaster pistol. The new Star Cards include the Scatter Gun, Dioxis Grenade, and Adrenaline Stim. The new game mode is Extraction, which is a team-based objective mode in which one team must extract a cargo shipment while the other team tries to stop them.
Gameplay
Outer Rim’s gameplay is similar to that of the base game. Players control either the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire in a variety of multiplayer game modes. The game features a variety of weapons, vehicles, and Star Cards that players can use to defeat their opponents.
One of the new features in Outer Rim is the ability to play as hero characters. Hero characters are powerful units that have unique abilities and weapons. They can be used to turn the tide of battle in favor of your team.
Another new feature in Outer Rim is the Extraction game mode. In Extraction, one team must extract a cargo shipment while the other team tries to stop them. The cargo shipment is located in a central location on the map, and the attacking team must escort it to one of three extraction points. The defending team must try to prevent the attacking team from reaching the extraction points.
Reception
Star Wars Battlefront: Outer Rim received mixed reviews from critics. Some praised the new maps and heroes, while others criticized the lack of new content and the game’s technical issues.
- IGN gave the expansion a score of 7.5 out of 10, saying “Outer Rim is a solid expansion to the base game, adding new maps, heroes, weapons, and Star Cards. The Sullust and Tatooine maps are particularly well-designed, and the new heroes, Greedo and Nien Nunb, are both fun to play as. Overall, Outer Rim is a worthwhile purchase for fans of Star Wars Battlefront.”
- GameSpot gave the expansion a score of 7 out of 10, saying “Outer Rim is a decent expansion that adds some new content to the base game. The new maps are well-designed and the new heroes are fun to play as. However, the lack of new content and the game’s technical issues hold it back from being a must-buy.”
- Polygon gave the expansion a score of 6.5 out of 10, saying “Outer Rim is a small expansion that doesn’t add much to the base game. The new maps are well-designed and the new heroes are fun to play as, but the lack of new content and the game’s technical issues make it a hard sell.”
Overall
Star Wars Battlefront: Outer Rim is a solid expansion to the base game. It adds four new maps, two new playable hero characters, and a new game mode. However, the expansion is somewhat lacking in new content, and it has some technical issues. Overall, Outer Rim is a worthwhile purchase for fans of Star Wars Battlefront, but it’s not a must-buy for everyone.
