Introduction
‘Metroid: Zero Mission’ offers a deep dive into Samus Aran’s first mission, expanding the original Metroid narrative.
Synopsis
The game follows the journey of Samus Aran, a bounty hunter, who travels to planet Zebes after learning that the Space Pirates are experimenting with Metroids, hostile parasitic creatures. The game takes place on Planet Zebes, a large, open-ended world with areas connected by doors and elevators.
The player controls Samus Aran as she travels through the planet’s caverns and environments, hunting Space Pirates. The gameplay focuses on exploration, with the player searching for power-ups to reach previously inaccessible areas. The game features a unique “sequence breaking” method, where the player may come across caverns that bypass certain sections.
In the year 20X5 of the Cosmic Calendar, the Space Pirates attacked a deep-space research vessel and seized capsules containing samples of an unknown species that had been discovered on planet SR388. The Space Pirates’ objective was to acquire these life-forms; known simply as Metroids, these floating organisms were incredibly dangerous as they could latch onto any other organism and drain its life-energy.
“Metroid: Zero Mission” was the first game in the series developed for the Super Famicom. Despite being the first game in the series without the involvement of Steven Spielberg, the creator of the series, it was well-received by fans and critics alike.
