Do! Run Run: A Unique and Challenging Arcade Classic
Released in 1984, Do! Run Run (known as Super Pierrot in Japan) is the fourth and final incarnation of Mr. Do!, the Universal video game mascot. It’s a unique and challenging arcade classic that combines elements of Mr. Do!, Pac-Man, and Qix.
Gameplay
Do! Run Run is a platforming puzzle game in which the player controls Mr. Do!, a clown with a bouncing powerball. The goal of the game is to collect all of the dots on each stage while avoiding monsters. Mr. Do! can create closed off sections by running along the playfield and leaving a line behind him. Any dots left behind in these enclosed areas turn into cherries, which are worth more points.
The game features two precariously balanced log traps on each stage. These logs can be rolled downslope if either pushed from above or closely approached from the propped up stick side. This can be used to crush monsters or to create new paths through the stage.
Levels
Do! Run Run has 50 stages, each with its own unique layout. The stages become increasingly difficult as the game progresses, with more monsters and more complex layouts.
Enemies
There are four types of monsters in Do! Run Run:
- Baddies: These are the most common type of monster. They move slowly and can be easily avoided.
- Runners: These monsters move quickly and can be difficult to catch.
- Floaters: These monsters float in the air and can only be defeated by hitting them with Mr. Do!’s powerball.
- Ghosts: These monsters are invisible and can only be seen when they are close to Mr. Do!.
Power-Ups
There are two types of power-ups in Do! Run Run:
- Speed Up: This power-up makes Mr. Do! run faster.
- Bomb: This power-up allows Mr. Do! to throw a bomb that can destroy all of the monsters on the screen.
Legacy
Do! Run Run was a critical and commercial success, and it is still considered to be one of the best arcade games of all time. It has been ported to a variety of home platforms, including the NES, Sega Master System, and Commodore 64.
Conclusion
